Jasmine Women is a Chinese film that depicts the lives of three generations of women in Shanghai within the same family, comparing them to jasmine flowers. It explores the experiences of the grandmother, mother, and daughter throughout their lives in Shanghai during the 1930s, 1950s, and 1980s. The experiences obviously differ depending on the period considered.
The plot is imbued with sadness, oppression, and dark nuances, which can sometimes evoke a latent pain in the viewer. However, a glimmer of hope shines through the entire story because resilience is deeply rooted in the very essence of this family.
The film stars Zhang Ziyi and Joan Chen. Directed by Hou Yong in 2004, Zhang Ziyi was awarded the Golden Rooster Award for Best Actress for her performance. The film was released in theaters in 2006.
